The Advocacy Center (formerly the Task Force for Battered Women/Child Sexual Abuse Project) provides supportive services to adults and teens who have been or are in abusive relationships, children who have been exposed to domestic violence, youth and adults who have been sexually abused, sexually assaulted, sexually harassed or raped, their non-offending family members and friends, and adult survivors of child sexual abuse. The Advocacy Center provides:
  • 24-hour hotline
  • confidential emergency shelter
  • legal advocacy
  • accompany to services, such as hospital or law enforcement
  • emotional support
  • support and empowerment groups
  • information and referral
  • prevention education and risk reduction education
  • professional and community training
DONATIONS
  • Adult Clothing: take to Trader K's; the Advocacy Center receives credit for the clothing's value which its clients can use
  • Children's Clothing: take to Mama Goose; the Advocacy Center receives credit for the clothing's value which its clients can use for their clothing needs
  • Other Donations: diapers, new toiletry items, new or very gently used toys, new or very gently used household linens (towels and bed sheets),bus passes, gift cards, cash
  • Donations for holiday gifts for families living in the shelter and for other agency clients; call the Client Services Director @ 277-3203.
  • Used Cell Phones: drop off at the United Way (313 North Aurora Street, (607) 272-6286) or Verizon (downtown Ithaca, East Buffalo and North Tioga Streets)

Education Director
The Education Department of The Advocacy Center provides community education, professional training and age appropriate prevention and risk reduction education programs for children, teens and adults around the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault and child sexual abuse. The Advocacy Center maintains an extensive lending library of over 2000 resources relating to domestic violence and child sexual abuse. To make meet with an educator or use the library call the Advocacy Center office to make an appointment.

SANE Clinical Coordinator
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program is a collaborative program of Cayuga Medical Center and the Advocacy Center. This program allows specially trained nurses to collect evidence and provide medical treatment to the survivor of sexual assault while he/she is in the emergency room. With the survivor's consent, a team consisting of a SANE nurse, victim advocate, and a member of law enforcement work together to help the survivor cope with the trauma of the assault.

The purpose of Children Against Sexual Abuse group is to enhance coping skills and reduce isolation in children who have been sexually abused. Guilt, shame, fear and loss are among those issues discussed in the group. A variety of modalities are used to facilitate the group process (role-plays, drawing, discussion).

The Prevention Information Resource Center (PIRC) and Parent Helpline offers assistance, information and referrals by phone, mail, internet, in-person and at public events for families and professionals. Utilize a 150 language line and have bi-lingual staff support. PIRC develops and disseminates parenting and child abuse prevention literature for parents, kids & teens.
