Bridges for Youth and Families, a NYS-certified Interim Family Program, provides emergency services to runaway, homeless and unaccompanied youth.
Focused on runaway prevention and reunification, Bridges staff works with young people who:
  • are thinking of leaving home or running away
  • have left home or run away
  • are homeless and want to reunite with their families

Youth living away from parents or legal guardian may also be eligible for services
Services for youth up to age 21 include:
  • family mediation
  • advocacy
  • community outreach and education
  • intensive case management
  • short-term solution-focused counseling
  • transportation
  • anger management and life skills groups
  • social and recreational activities

Bridges may also provide short-term emergency shelter for youth under 18.

The Lesbian and Gay Family Building Project, a project of the Ferre Institute, helps lesbian, gay, bisexual,transgender,and queer (LGBTQ) people in upstate New York build and sustain healthy families through support, advocacy, information and access to community and sensitive health care and services. Current Programs and Services:
  • Pride and Joy Families: network of LGBTQ-led families offering support, education and a sense of community to adults and children
  • educational programs for LGBTQ parents and aspiring parents: information and discussion on family-building options and issues related to parenting as an LGBTQ person
  • LGBT Healthy Families Initiative: resources and information tailored to LGBTQ families to help create better health outcomes for adults and children in these families. Maintains a website and toolkits collecting and recording family health histories: www.LGBTHealthInitiative.org
  • provider training: programs and information on LGBTQ families and parenting to improve the cultural competency of educators and health and human service professionals.

The Education Department encourages acceptance of responsible sexuality as a positive force that can improve the quality of life by:
  • providing sexuality education programs, workshops, in-service and professional training, conferences, consultation and referrals on a range of sexuality issues to schools, community groups, faith communities, youth serving agencies, families and parents
  • maintaining a Sexuality Education Resource Center of print, video and curriculum resources about sexual health and positive sexuality

Planned Parenthood's LGBT Family Building program is designed for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered individuals and couples who want to start or build a family. The Family Building Program offers educational materials, counseling and referrals that address the the challenging process of becoming a parent, including medical, psychological, legal and relationship issues. The program focuses on helping people clarify their wishes for family building in a supportive environment free from heterosexism and homophobia.

The Public Affairs Department mobilizes pro-choice action through PPSFL's Action Alert Networks and events in the community and on campuses. This department also oversees lobbying activities on behalf of the agency and responds to media inquiries on issues concerning reproductive rights.
