Ithaca Interaction Therapy specializes in developing the social communication skills (social skills) that allow children, teens, and adults access to school, career, workplace, friendship, and community.

Social communication (also known as social skills or social language) involves recognizing the way our actions affect the thoughts and feelings of others, how they respond to us, how we react, and how others affect our thoughts and feelings. Difficulty understanding the needs and intentions of others can prevent people from enjoying the academic success, employment, and friendships of which they are capable. This difficulty can affect every aspect of an individual's life, including organization, planning, timeliness, mood/affect, focus, starting and keeping relationships, paying bills, living with a roommate, initiating change, the ability to communicate for multiple purposes, and more.

At this time, my practice consists exclusively of psychological assessment. I do not provide ongoing psychological treatment. Psychological assessment reports will contain detailed recommendations that families and individuals can take back to their school and/or outpatient treatment provider for implementation. I work with adults and children of all ages. Psychological evaluation is useful to assess for learning and academic challenges, ADHD, developmental concerns (including autistic spectrum disorders), identification of giftedness, challenges with social/emotional adjustment and functioning, and challenges with independent living. I would be happy to consult with you to determine if psychological evaluation makes sense as the next step for you to take.

Maria Muscente, LCSW-R

Address:
122 West Court Street, Suite 109 , Ithaca, NY  14850
Phone:

Maria graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1994, andfrom Marywood University with a Master's degree in 1996. Maria worked for the (Special Children's Franziska Racker Centers for six years, both providing social work services in their preschool classrooms for children with special needs, and providing play therapy to preschool children. Maria also co-directed the Family Resolution Project through the Racker Centers, and affiliated with the Department of Social Services, to assist families who had open cases in the child protective unit in strength-based care planning for their children. Maria facilitated a support group for foster and adoptive parents through the Department of Social Services also during this time.
Maria has her Certificate in School Social Work, and has worked both as an elementary school social worker in the Ithaca City School District, and as a middle and high school social worker in the Spencer Van Etten School District. Maria currently contracts with the state of New York Tompkins County Early Intervention Program, and the Committees on Preschool Special Education in surrounding school districts to provide play therapy and family counseling services to children within these two programs.

Maria specializes in child, and adolescent therapy. Specific areas of interest include helping people with parenting support and education, adolescent counseling, play therapy with young children, and supportive counseling for adults. Maria believes that people innately know what they need to feel whole and healthy. Therapeutic support offers people an arena to search for their own answers with gentle guidance and clarity. This support can strengthen both skill sets and feeling of ownership and confidence in ability to care for oneself. Maria's therapeutic philosophy is a strength-based, person centered approach to well-being and mental health. Maria is also the mother of three young daughters.

She completed her BS in Human Development and Family Studies in 1993 while working as an infant/toddler teacher at Ithaca Community Childcare Center. She stayed on at IC3 after graduating, where her interest in working with children and families led to a career in social work. She is experienced in play therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy with children and adolescents, and has experience in teaching Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills to teenagers. Her approach to working with children and adolescents is to help them discover their own strengths, and to develop life-long skills to manage their emotions so they can engage effectively with others in their world.
