Seniors who want to continue working or return to work can also be assisted.

Employment and Career Services offers a variety of employment options for individuals who have a vision disability. The program recognizes the importance of desire, choice, qualifications, availability and options in employment and economic independence, and is designed to offer the widest range of training, employment and career development based on client skills and wishes. Placement services help individuals prepare and search for employment. Assistance is available in resume' writing, interviewing techniques and strategies, computer skills and assessments, job search networking, employer consultation, and social and communication skills. Employment at competitive pay and benefits in a modern manufacturing facility are available at the A.V.R.E. facility. Switchboard operations contracts offer employment with responsibility for processing calls, monitoring hospital alarm systems, and dispatching response teams. Employment and Career Services works with young people with a vision disability in obtaining summer work or jobs that are part of a school-to-work transition program. The key element is to obtain the broadest experience possible to prepare for an independent and successful working life.

The Infant and Children's Services Department works with infants, pre-schoolers and school-age children up to age 14 in 9 New York counties. Age appropriate programs offer the following services: Ages 0 through pre-school:
  • Staff work with infants and toddlers, and their parents to provide a wide variety of tactile and sensory learning experiences.
  • Children ages 0-2 are provided with vision stimulation.
  • Pre-schoolers are provided with Orientation and mobility (travel-training) instruction, and pre-Braille skills to prepare for schooling.
  • Forums and information sharing for parents are also provided.
  • Close coordination is maintained with Early Intervention and Pre-school agencies, and the New York state Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped.
School-age children:
  • Services for children, their parents, and teachers in all grades up to the age of 14 include O & M instruction at school and around the community, independent living skills training both at home and at school, teaching Braille and adaptive computer technology, and connecting to peers.
Recreation For Kids:
  • Recreational outings for children and teens that are legally blind are provided to increase the social skills, independence, confidence and self-esteem of children with a vision disability.

The Commission provides services for legally blind individuals. Vocational Rehabilitation Services include evaluation, counseling, sponsorship in college & other training programs, low vision services, job training, rehabilitation teaching and mobility instruction. There are special services for children and older adults. The Commission offers counseling to people under age 14 and their families and consultation for agencies, institutions and schools serving the legally blind.

Staff provides employment advice and referrals to returning disabled service members, recently medically retired service members, and their spouses. The primary mission is to assist these members with their search for employment opportunities at the Department of the Navy (DON), as well as with other Federal and State agencies. The Finger Lakes Independence Center (FLIC) strives to educate individuals and organizations about their rights and responsibilities and works with them to solve problems of independent living. The Center provides information about eligibility requirements and procedures, explanation of benefits, and independent living skills training. Peer counseling and support groups for people with depression, and socials for individuals with disabilities are also available. FLIC offers free community outreach, speakers, workshops on how to manage chronic health conditions and other topics, and training sessions to develop community awareness of disability issues. Sign language interpreter referrals and American Sign Language classes are offered. FLIC also runs the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program for Medicaid recipients in Tompkins County and provides architectural accessibility consultations and modular ramp installation.

The Division of Labor Standards investigates and enforces the New York State Labor Laws concerning minimum wage, hours of work, child labor, payment of wages and wage supplements, industrial homework, apparel industry registration and farm labor. The Early Intervention Program (EI) offers evaluation and therapeutic services to children ages birth to age 3 with developmental delays and/or disabilities. Services provided include but are not limited to: evaluations, speech, physical, occupational, hearing, vision and counseling services. The Physically Handicapped Children's Program reimburses for health services to eligible children age birth to 21 yrs. The Children with Special Health Care Needs Program helps families find and access appropriate community programs, health care professionals and healthcare coverage (insurance/medicaid), advocacy support for school CPSE/CSE.
