The Outpatient Unit provides individual, group, and family counseling in a medically supervised setting. Evaluation of a client's medical status is an integral part of the total treatment process. CARS offers walk in assessment and treatment on demand for drug and alcohol issues. To address families in recovery, CARS offers a six week program called the Family Rebuilding Program. Anyone who has a family member, significant other, or friend who is struggling with the disease of addiction is invited to join the program for support and education. This program is free, open to the public, and participants do not need to be a client of CARS. The group meets Tuesday evenings 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for six weeks. The meetings are open-ended, repeating every six weeks. Participants can enter the sessions on any week as the program is continuous. Clinical Intervention Services are offered based on the best practice Love First Clinical Intervention Model (www.lovefirst.net). This model of intervention which has been designated by Hazelden as a best practice and is defined by one rule: to persuade an individual suffering from addiction to enter treatment while preserving their dignity and worth as a human being. CARS trains and supports the family and other significant people in the addicted individual's life to lovingly and effectively persuade that individual to enter treatment.

Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services Residential Facility provides a drug-free, therapeutic learning environment to provide support and counseling for where substance abusers. The facility has semi-private dorm rooms for 60, dining and cooking areas, leisure and recreational space, a large athletic field, classrooms, and counseling offices. The clinical portion of the program is based on the Matrix Model and New Directions treatment programs developed by Hazelden. The program is abstinence based, highly structured, and requires strong focus and commitment of participants. Residents are involved in numerous structured therapeutic activities such as

  • family assessment
  • counseling
  • educational and vocational programs
  • music
  • recreational activities
  • a job function system
The average duration of the program is six to twelve months in the residential facility and three to six months of outpatient counseling.

The Supportive Living Program is a supervised sober living program. Clients reside in apartments with other Supportive Living client(s). Clients in this program meet as a group, 3 times weekly, participate in outpatient treatment, and community service work, to address daily sober living skills and other issues. Clients also meet individually, at least bi-weekly with the Supportive Living Coordinator. Supportive living Services has space for 18 clients. Services are provided to single adults as well as single parents with up to two children under the age of 10.

The Behavioral Services Unit includes a 20-bed inpatient adult psychiatric care unit and a 6-bed inpatient adolescent program. The unit offers 24-hour comprehensive psychiatric care and medical and social evaluation during times of crisis and stabilization. The unit provides specialized and general services for people temporarily unable to cope with the stresses of everyday living. Group psychotherapy and cognitive discussion groups in several formats are provided daily. Services include:

The Detox Program is a 3 to 8-day inpatient treatment program for those who need help with the alcohol withdrawal process. The program provides individual, group and family counseling, nutritional education, medication and referrals for continued rehabilitation. No physician referral needed.

Many services delivered by the medical center may be accessed on an outpatient basis, both at the main campus and at our Ithaca and Cortland Convenient Care Centers. Two venues are available for outpatient surgery: the Same Day Surgery program at the medical center and Surgicare at the East Campus on Warren Road. Laboratory tests and physical therapy treatments are available at Ithaca Convenient Care Center as well as at the main campus. The medical center is a certified Cancer Center of Excellence, and houses the Ithaca Center for Pain Management. The center provides diabetes and other patient education. The Emergency department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Palliative Care provides a collection of services designed to meet the medical and emotional needs of seriously ill patient in order to relieve suffering and to improve the quality of life of patients. Team members address issues such as nausea and vomiting, pain, weakness, mental confusion, and other symptoms related to the disease or its treatment. The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program is a collaborative program of Cayuga Medical Center and the Advocacy Center. This program allows specially trained nurses to collect evidence and provide medical treatment to the survivor of sexual assault while he/she is in the emergency room. With the survivor's consent, a team consisting of a SANE nurse, victim advocate, and a member of law enforcement work together to help the survivor cope with the trauma of the assault.
